How to Stay Sane in an Insane World

by DavalosMcCormack on February 8, 2011

Pick up a newspaper, listen to the radio, go online or watch the news on TV and you are bombarded with images of death and loss and pain and suffering. And that’s just the sports section!

Venture deeper and you are confronted with stores of turmoil in Egypt and Sudan, ambushes and suicide bombing in Iraq and Afghanistan, people drowning in floods in Australia, freezing to death in New England and starving to death in North Korea. After all that you could easily be excused for feeling a tad overwhelmed at the state of the world.

That’s when I turn to poetry to lift my soul. Particularly poets like Roger McGough. Here’s one of my favorites.

I think about dying.

About disease, starvation,

violence, terrorism, war,

the end of the world.

It helps,

keep my mind off things.

See, don’t you feel better already!
