Workout Wednesday – Hit the Floor!

Okay team, gather around!  Here are some ideas for giving your core muscles a little workout and changing up your exercise routine at the same time.  The core muscles are important because they are the inner strength that helps with posture, overall tone, and they act like a natural girdle for you.  So throw out your spandex and try these!

We all know the plank right?  That’s the core endurance exercise where you lie flat on your stomach and then push up and support your upper and lower torso on your elbows and toes while keeping your entire body taut.  Make sure you are engaging the buttocks without hiking it up.  The body should be rigid and straight.  That’s right, now stay there in this position for 1-3 minutes, or as long as you can.  Easy right?

Here’s a variation you can include.  Turn your body so you are resting on one elbow, say your right, while turning your legs so you are resting on your right foot.  (if this doesn’t feel balanced to you, you can use the top left foot behind the right)  Now you are balanced on your side, stretch your left arm to the ceiling and sweep it underneath your body, reaching between the space between your body, right armpit  as you reach as far as you can toward the back.  Repeat this 10 times.

Too easy?  Okay, go back to the plank position and lift and reach your right arm out in front of you so you are balancing on your toes and one arm.  Change arms for 8 times and then do the same with your legs, one at at time.

Don’t you feel good?  Every little muscle in your core is actively contracting.  The slower you do these exercises the more benefit you will be getting.  You can see a close variation on this video by John Sifferman.
