Workout Wednesday – Back to School Edition

by DavalosMcCormack on September 9, 2009

The Labor Day weekend has made it official, summer is over, the kids are back in school, and you have a lot of time to make up for all those weeks you didn’t exercise. All those great b-bqs. All those luscious, perfectly chilled margueritas. All that time spent sitting watching the kids run and jump and swim while you sat there with a great book in your lap, dozing and just enjoying the day.

Happy memories eh! Well, now just as its time for the kids to head back to school or college, maybe it’s time you went old-school, and tried out the President’s Council on Physical Fitness and Sports adult fitness test.  It’s a great way to see how fit you are, how unfit you are, and what you need to work on to get in better shape.

It’s pretty straight forward stuff and doesn’t require a gym membership or elaborate equipment to do it. For instance there is a one mile or 1.5 mile timed walk/run (depending on your level of fitness, and the test provides some really good background on helping you decide which elements to do and how hard to push).

Once you have done that you can try the timed sit-ups and push-ups, seeing how many you can do of both inside one minute.

Then you move on to seeing how flexible you are, or in my case how inflexible you are! It involves the “sit-and-reach” move where you sit on the floor with legs splayed out wide and then you slowly (and I do mean slowly, you don’t want to strain anything) bend forward with your finger tips on the floor to see how far you can go. The further you can bend while keeping your legs flat on the ground, the more flexible you are.

It’s a simple test, one designed to give you a quick snapshot of how fit you are, and where you need to start working.

The President’s Council website can help you in keeping track of your efforts. It has a section that allows you to record your first effort, and then to add each new effort as you slowly build strength and stamina. It’s a great way to keep track of your progress and before you know it, you’ll be feeling fitter and healthier than ever.

Just in time to go hogwild again at Thanksgiving!
