Workout Wednesday – Try a Laugh

by DavalosMcCormack on August 19, 2009

Well, Mr. McCormack is at a meeting tonight so I am in charge of “Workout Wednesday”!  As you know, he would probably have you doing leg lifts, deep squats, running in place, or how about those kettle balls!  (oh, sorry, that was me).   But this Wednesday, my friends, is going to be a little different because I would like to tell you all about the importance of laughter!

Yes, LOL, laughing till you cry, splitting a rib, laugh till you wet your pants!  You see?  Laughter is a very physical exercise! In fact, one of the most important things you can do to balance your life is to laugh out loud every day.  Yes, that’s right, it gets the endorphins working, the serotonin flowing, not to mention the dopamine that kicks in.   When you laugh you breath deeper and use muscles you haven’t used for quite some time, unless you laugh a lot and in these grim economic times that ain’t many of us.  In fact, when Mr. McCormack comes home every evening, one of the first things I ask him is, “Did you laugh out loud today?”

Laughter can actually change your perspective when facing a tragic experience.  Remember,  the Academy award winning film “A Beautiful Life” there were some scenes in that film where I was laughing and crying at the same time, but it was life affirming to witness the love in that movie.

I remember when my father was dying and the family had gathered around his hospital bed to say goodbye.  My daughter sang Ave Maria to him…then she went on to sing the entire program of the San Francisco Girls Chorus because she knew he wouldn’t be around to see the Chorus performance.  I joined her in singing his favorite tunes, then we sang our favorites and every single song we knew, including the entire Beatle Collection.

Finally, when we ran out of songs we became silent.  Such a moment of quiet fell over the somber room, when my sister suddenly belted out the only song she knew:  “The minute you walked in the joint, I could tell you were a man of distinction …a real big spender!’ Hearing “Big Spender”, a Broadway show tune about a prostitute and her customer, we all burst out laughing and crying at the same time.

I guess you had to be there.

….but the point is, laugh!  It’s good for you!

I love my dad.
