Breathtaking Video – And I Do Mean Breathtaking

by DavalosMcCormack on August 3, 2009

This is one of the most amazing videos I’ve ever seen, made all the more incredible by the fact that to witness the event and catch it on tape, the photographer Debra had to hike up to the top of Yosemite Falls in the Yosemite Valley.

Now, I’ve done that hike. It’s bloody hard work, 3,000 feet straight up and you end up at an altitude of more than 6,000 feet – which if you live at sea level like I do is way high.

Shirley and I did the hike a few years ago in early spring. The winter snows were just melting so the walk was a mix of steep switchback trails, wading through streams, and the last third was squelching through snow. By the time we got to the top we were feeling pretty cool and pleased with ourselves for having made it.

Then we turned the corner at the top of the falls and there in front of us were a bunch of kids – 9 and 10 year olds – playing barefoot in the snow. Suddenly our achievements didn’t seem so impressive.

Debra got to the top, and saw a man walking across a tightrope stretched across the falls. Now, remember, it is 3,000 feet straight down. The wind is blowing. It’s insane, and utterly compelling. Tightrope Walker over Yosemite Falls

What does this have to do with exercise? Well, if Debra hadn’t been in such good shape she couldn’t have made it to the top, and certainly couldn’t have held the camera steady enough to get this incredible video.

So, watch it, share it with friends. Enjoy it. And plan a trip to Yosemite and take a hike to the top of the falls. With or without a tight rope walker up there it will take your breath away.

That’s amazing but at least he has a safety rope. Have you seen Man on Wire? Now that does make your palms sweat!
