Workout Wednesday – the Plank

by DavalosMcCormack on July 22, 2009

How could something that doesn’t involve any movement, where you just stay perfectly still be so good for your abs! And how can it be so hard! Those are the questions that race through my mind when I do the Plank.

It’s a simple exercise that really works on your core muscles, building up strength and endurance.

Here’s how you do it. Lie on the ground with your stomach on the floor. Then raise yourself up on your arms, with your forearms resting on the ground and your elbows directly underneath your shoulders. At the same time raise your feet up on your toes.

You should now have your body in a straight line from your toes touching at one end to your forearms supporting your upper body.

That’s it. Really. That’s all you have to do. Except hold that position for around one minute without moving. Doing that forces you to really work your abs to keep your body upright and straight.

Sounds easy. But believe me it’s not. So start out by doing it for 20 or 30 seconds, take a break for 20 or 30 seconds, and repeat. It will help you build up a strong core very quickly.

Want to see how it’s done. Check this out.
