Summer Fruits, Some Are Not

by DavalosMcCormack on June 9, 2009

There are a number of tell-tale signs that summer is arriving in San Francisco. First of all it gets colder! The fog rolls in off the hills and the temperature drops 20 degrees. Another sign is that there are even more tourists than usual – and most of them seem to be wondering why the heck they are so cold in June!

But my favorite sign it’s summer is that suddenly the farmers markets and grocery stores are ablaze with color as all the summer fruits arrive.

It’s a wonderful sight to see. Vivid reds and yellows and orange and dazzling greens and blues and blacks. And what’s great is that many are locally grown, some are even organic. You want to just grab them and eat them right there (though I don’t recommend trying, the stores typically are not happy with that kind of behaviour!)

And not only are they delicious tasting, they are also really good for you, packed with anti-oxidants, vitamins, minerals, fiber and other good stuff. They don’t need cooking or prepping – though you should wash them before eating – they are the perfect ‘fast food’.

There’s another benefit too. Fruits and veg – let’s not forget them either – are packed with fiber and fill you up fast so if you are eating a lot of fruit you probably won’t be eating as much other stuff – such as fat and carbs and salty foods, so it can help you lose weight.

If you want to shed a few pounds fruit is a great thing to have around you all the time. An orange is a wonderful, sweet complement to a cup of tea or coffee, so you won’t need to have those chocolate cookies. And in the middle of the afternoon when you are beginning to slow down and crave something sweet, skip the vending machine candy bars and instead bite into a big, juicy apple.

There are other health benefits too; a diet rich in fruits and veg has been shown to help reduce the risk of heart disease, diabetes and some cancers, and to lower blood pressure.

And because all that healthy eating will give your skin a glowing appearance you’ll not only feel better, you’ll look better too.

And if you are wondering about the title, it doesn’t mean anything. I just liked the way it sounded. That’s the beauty of a blog, you can do anything you like!
