How to Rev Up Your Metabolism

by DavalosMcCormack on March 13, 2009

I work out.  I do!  I have been working out judiciously  for 4 years.  I have high blood pressure too! So I work out and eat right, (sort of) and I work out.  I know that I am healthy because I have a lot of energy and I….uhm….work out.

It’s also my misfortune to have a metabolism that ignores all the stuff I’m doing.

What the?!!!  I understand that I have a certain “body type”, thanks to my father (I can see the proof of that any time I look at my butt in the mirror!) I also understand that I need to add more to my exercise regime in order to just maintain the same weight and not put any more on.

So how do we do that?  Well, here’s a suggestion.  Increase your metabolism!  You can!  Here’s what I’ve learned.

The secret to revving up your metabolism is…..never age!  Kid’s have no trouble burning those calories.  That is if they lay off the “fast” foods.  No, they can go through hundreds of calories every single day just by running around and acting like, well, kids.

But me?  Nooooooo!  So how can we…I….you…me, kick our metabolism up a notch?

Here are the secrets:

1-Build muscle. If you are a woman and over 40, honey, your metabolism is sloooooooowing down.  But no worries!  Your resting body still burns calories and those folks with muscle burn more calories just resting than folks who don’t have much muscle.  In fact, if you have built up muscles they will each burn 6 calories a day just to sustain themselves. It may not seem like much but 6 calories here, 6 there, pretty soon it adds up.  So take out those weights and start lifting!

2-Do aerobics!  You not only burn calories while working out but your metabolic rate increases in the hours after you have worked out.  When you work out really push yourself and you will increase you metabolic rate just by increasing the intensity of your workout.  Kevin says the body gets used to routine so changing up and varying the  intensity of your workout will increase your metabolic rate and eat up those calories.

3-Drink water!  Studies have shown that your intake of water will process calories easier, and if you are even just a little dehydrated it will slow your metabolism.  At last, an answer to why we should be drinking 8 glasses of water a day!

4-Drink cold beverages.  Metabolism kicks in to burn more calories when you drink cold beverages.  I don’t think they are talking about milkshakes here – or beer, sorry Kevin.  Probably water or sugar-free beverages.  You can also get the calorie burning benefit from cold fruit or iced tea or coffee, as long as you forgo the sweeteners.  We’re talking 10 calories a day, just because it’s cold!

5-Eat Spicy Food – We know now that hot and spicy foods are not only good at combating pain, but the spicy food also increases your metabolism.  Perhaps it takes more to digest or maybe it just revs up your salsa lessons.  Whatever.  Spicy foods increase your metabolism.

So there are 5 ideas to get your metabolism humming.  It doesn’t seem like a lot but the extra calories burned consistently over the course of a year can magically turn in to inches and pounds lost!

That’s what I’m going to try and do. I’ll let you know how I get on.
