Workout Wednesday #6

My turn to give you a new exercise to add to your already energized routine.  I was appalled and amazed when I hit a plateau in my exercise routine.  I was going to the gym and exercising on a regular basis, yet nothing was changing.

I wasn’t losing ground but I wasn’t becoming the toned, tall, sleek, woman I wanted to be.   I’m 5 foot 4, so I knew increasing my height would be a challenge! But what about the sleek and toned?  Then a trainer gave me some interesting news.   She said that your body gets used to the exercise routine you do and it stops.  Stops!  Stops what? Stops getting leaner, better, tighter.  In other words your body is in a holding pattern unless you perk it up with some new routines.

So I am going to tell you about a routine called the Turkish Getup from the book “You Being Beautiful”.

What I like about this exercise is that it makes me feel like it is sooo easy that I can trick my body into thinking it is something new and exciting that will burn fat and tone those muscles.  In fact, it actually works the entire core and really is a fat burner!

Here’s how you do it.  First, it doesn’t need anything but a hand weight. Whatever weight you want. To begin with try something light, at least until you’ve got the mechanics down, and then keep adding more weight.

To begin with lie flat on your back with one arm straight up, perpendicular to the floor, (as if you are reaching to the ceiling) Hold the weight in the hand toward the ceiling.  Keeping your arm above your head at all times, stand up slowly, using your legs and free hand to push off the ground. Keep your core muscles engaged the whole way up, this will help you keep your body in the right position without adding extra strain to the back.

Once you are up, pause for a second, then slowly get back into the down position making sure to keep the arm up the whole time.

Repeat this 10 times with the same arm. When you are done, do it again with the other arm, another 10 times.  Build up to 20 times on each side.

Sounds easy, huh?….Talk to me after…when your core muscles are burning that fat. It’s a simple exercise but boy, it works out every muscle from your finger tips to your toes.
