Rahm Mixes it Up – So Should You!

by DavalosMcCormack on January 26, 2009

Rahm Emanuel has quite a tough reputation. Every article about President Obama’s Chief of Staff uses words like hotheaded, temperamental, feisty, bombastic and impulsive. They also talk about his use of what is referred to as “colorful” language – that’s what the rest of us call cursing.

Emanuel is clearly someone who is not afraid to mix it up in politics and government. It’s a philosophy he seems to carry over into his workouts as well.

A recent New York Times article profile said Emanuel swims one mile several times a week. On days when he doesn’t swim he hits the gym,  using a stationary bike for 25 minutes then the elliptical trainer for 20 minutes; after that he does 120 sit-ups and 55 push-ups.

I don’t know how he came up with those times or those numbers but they are pretty impressive and explain why he’s in such great shape.

His willingness to mix it up in the political world has earned him a reputation as a tough character. Look at his workout and you’ll see that his willingness to mix it up in the gym and pool as well is the reason his work out is effective.

In such a high pressure job it’s important to have some outlet for all that stress and tension. Working out regularly not only keeps him in good shape, it’s a way of letting off steam, burning up aggression. It’s also a way of clearing the head and giving you a different perspective on the issues facing you.

Emanuel’s varied workout exercises every part of his body, and builds strength, stamina and endurance. Swimming is one of the best all-round exercises you can do and it lengthens muscles rather than compresses them the way running does.

Riding the bike and using the elliptical build stamina and get the heart and lungs pumping. Push-ups and sit-ups work the upper body and core muscles.

All in all, a great balance, and if it works for Rahm Emanuel, I’m betting it would work for the rest of us too.
