How to Avoid Getting Into a Rut

What’s the difference between a cactus and a caucus? Easy. With a cactus the pricks are on the outside!

Now, what’s the difference between a routine and a rut? The answer isn’t quite so easy or obvious. But sooner or later, for most of us, what starts out as a regular workout or exercise routine slowly slips into a rut.

Why is that bad? Because our bodies are constantly adjusting to what we do. If we use the same muscles all the time and do the same workout routine then it will help us stay in good shape but after a while we won’t see any real changes.

So, if you want to keep improving your fitness level or making sure you are working out every part of your body you have to keep changing things up.

I was reminded of that the other day when Shirley and I went for our first run for months. Now, it’s no secret that I have never cared for running. It’s a terrific exercise, one of the best for stamina and fitness, but I have always found it hard work and not much fun. So when winter comes it’s easy for me to put running aside in favor of indoor workouts.

But the other day, the weather was gorgeous so we got up early and went for a run. Boy did my legs and bottom hurt the rest of that day and next. The kind of stiffness and soreness you get after working out a muscle that’s been idle for too long.

It was my body’s way of telling me that I hadn’t done it for a while and that maybe I should think about doing it more often if I wanted to avoid feeling that way.

I think I’m going to listen to my body. It usually knows what is best.

So, I think the difference between a routine and a rut is just awareness. You need to constantly think about what you are doing so you don’t end up doing the same thing over and over, just because it’s what you are used to.

Routines are important. They help us create a healthy habit of working out. But every once in a while we have to break out of that routine, to make sure our body doesn’t get stuck in a rut.
