Workout Wednesday #3

I used to think a Burpee was someone who burped! That was until I met my sadistic Welsh gym teacher in high school. Then he showed me the true meaning of the word.

A Burpee is actually a great exercise that combines several muscle groups in one movement, it works the chest, the arms, the core muscles, the legs – and on top of that it gets the heart pumping and the lungs wheezing (I really need to stop smoking!)

Here’s how it works.

First, get into a push-up position. Do one complete push-up and then jump your legs forward and stand up. Then do a star jump or jumping jack. Drop back down into the push-up position and repeat.

Here’s a video demonstration to show you how it looks in action.

It may feel a little disjointed at first so when you are starting out try breaking it down into individual movements. Then once you feel comfortable with the sequence do it a bit faster until it all blends together into one smooth exercise.

You’ll quickly appreciate just how good it is at working the different muscle groups, or in more technical terms, it will kick your butt! That’s why it is used by football and soccer players, as well as the military, to build up strength and endurance.

One of the great things about the Burpee is that you don’t need a lot of room to do it. It’s a pretty self-contained exercise so you can do it at home, or in a relatively small space.  Do as many as you feel comfortable with at first, say ten, and then increase the number as you get more proficient at it.
