What Are You Exercising For?

by DavalosMcCormack on November 5, 2008

In the past people used to exercise just to stay in good shape, to be healthy, or to help them play their favorite sport. But increasingly people are working out with a very specific goal in mind, such as getting married or getting ready for bikini-season.

Here’s my favorite blurb to encourage brides-to-be to hit the gym: “You dream of wowing your soon-to-be husband as the church doors open, impressing guests who you might not have seen in years and having a great photo album to reminisce over when you’re old and grey. For many brides-to-be, this dream begins with losing weight and body toning.”

Losing weight and body toning. Ah, the stuff that bridal dreams are made of.

Then once you have figured out what you are trying to get in shape for all you have to do is choose the method. But with so many workout routines out there it’s getting increasingly hard to figure out which one is best for you.

For instance, you could try laughing your way to a flat stomach. A New York city gym is promoting its Abs’solutely Hysterical class, a 30-minute program taught by a comedian to help you tighten up your core muscles. Judging how unfunny most comedians are that could take a while to get in shape!

If you don’t like wearing Nike’s or Adidas, you can always try working out in your Manolo Blahnik’s. Crunch Fitness has a class called Stiletto Strength, which has you working out in your favorite high heels, promising to give you fantastic calf muscles and great posture.

And then of course you could try Flirty Girl Fitness, a class that involves pole dancing, belly dancing and chair striptease. It may be the only exercise class that doesn’t seem to require any clothes!

Now, maybe we need these very specific goals to motivate us to workout. Maybe we need these very specific workouts to vary our routines, to keep us interested. Whatever the reason if it works great, if not, don’t worry, there’ll be something new and even more bizarre along in a minute.
