Take a tour of a mental health hospital
For most people the phrase “mental health hospital” conjures up images of an ancient and crumbling Dickensian building, with dank walls and dirty floors, a cruel and abusive staff who keep patients heavily sedated to make it easier to control them.
Fortunately the reality today is usually very different. But the very nature of these institutions is such that, other than patients and staff, few people ever get to see the inside of a mental health hospital.
But now you can take a tour. Healthy & Simple was fortunate enough to get a glimpse inside the Sequoia Center for Behavioral Health at El Camino hospital, near San Francisco.
Medical Director Michael Fitzgerald wanted to shatter the myths and misunderstandings surrounding his center, to show that patients are kept in clean, comfortable surroundings; that staff are compassionate and well trained; and that patients and their families are fully involved in their recovery.
So take the tour, and hope this is the only time you ever have to go inside a hospital that specializes in treating mental health diseases.
